Year 2 Project: Exquisite Corpse

Inspired by Charles Freger’s photographic collections ‘Wilder Mann’ and ‘Yokainoshima’, this knitted textile collection is a blend of traditional European ritualistic costumes and Japanese mythological costumes. The collection reflects the contrast of extravagant and textured textiles of the European costumes, and the muted colour palette and subtle details of the Japanese costumes. This juxtaposition is represented through the choice of material, which is a mixture of fluffy and soft yarns, such as wool and mohair, and less textured yarns such as hemp and linen. This is also demonstrated through the techniques used within the samples to highlight the qualities of the yarn. Being Japanese and now living in a Western society, this collection is a representation of my experience of the East and West crossover. Highlighting the similarities and appreciating the differences, creating the connection between two cultures.
